Message from our President, Michelle Burt
Our 2008 programming schedule is starting to take shape! To help in the process the board will be asking members to complete a short survey at the February meeting. Please take the time to complete the survey. This information will help the board better serve the needs of the membership in the future. The board needs your ideas and opinions so we can best serve you in our volunteer roles. I will also be emailing the survey after the meeting so all members will have a chance to respond.
Remember to mark you calendars! NDAHRA has planned some interesting programs for the first quarter of 2008. Please plan to join us!
For the February meeting, Howard Kossover from the Social Security Administration will be speaking about retirement benefits. In March, Kevin Kopplin from Altru will speak about Disaster Preparedness and we will also have a presentation about the benefits of SHRM membership. Kathy Kulesa from the North Dakota Department of Labor will be presenting a ½ day morning program in April. More details to follow!
Michelle Burt, 2008 NDAHRA President

INTERNSHIPS
"Every semester, I am approached by an international student wanting to gain "real world" experience through an internship. In most cases, they want to get that experience here, in North Dakota. The majority of them, when asked, indicate they really like it here, and want to live and work here after graduation, if given the chance.
It seems to me that a company's list of strategic workforce solutions should include hiring international students as interns, and subsequently, working within the complex federal regulations to eventually hire some of them fulltime after they complete their college education.
One of the major difficulties we (Career Services staff region-wide) encounter, though, is determining what organizations will hire an international student intern?". That "magic list" of prospects does not exist.
Consequently, I am asking fellow NDAHRA members to respond to these two questions:
Please respond to me at jay_henrickson@mayvillestate.edu or 701-788-4899, and I will share the results of the "poll".
North Dakota has a tight labor pool .... and it will get tighter. Employers should consider international students/grads as another labor source. I realize that the federal regulations for hiring the grads fulltime are difficult. Once we can establish a viable list of prospective ND employers, though, the students/grads will be more than willing to do whatever it takes to wade through the process, as many would love to stay here. The "list" will give them some idea of what opportunities may be in their future."
