An
Invitation to HR Managers:
Participate on a Panel of HR Managers Working with UND HR
Students
Improving HR Practices based on Management Research
OVERVIEW
A team of students is assigned to a participating HR Manager
and prepares a report for the Manager.
The report includes recommendations with examples and reference sources from
leading Management journals. First, the team
meets with the HR Manager at the company location and discusses company
background information and also HR practices on topics such as recruiting,
selection, job performance, turnover, compensation, etc. Students are assigned to identify an HR area
to improve based on the discussions. The
HR manager may suggest an area of concern. Each team will search the management
journals to develop recommendations to address the focal topic. HR Managers are invited into the classroom in
April when students present highlights of their recommendations. Panel members will be invited to give brief
feedback and discuss with students the potential application of
recommendations, the likely benefits and / or drawbacks.
PROCESS: Students are
assigned to complete five major work steps:
1. Interview HR Managers at Company offices about two types
of information - company background and HR practices with brief follow up as
needed.
2. Prepare the case document company background and current
HR practices
3. Consider areas to improve
and search management journals for related research studies
4. Prepare a report with recommendations and Exhibits; prepare
a Power point presentation
5. Present highlights of recommendations to panels of HR
Managers in the classroom. This allows:
a. sharing results across student teams to
continue the learning process
b. sharing results across HR Managers to
build awareness on current Management research
c. brief dialogue on practicality of
recommendations

Commitments are needed from managers early in
January to plan the class syllabus
